The car has done this on and off for years. I was told by a mechanic at the dealership to press the breaks and jiggle the steering wheel to get the key to turn. This has worked in the past, but lately is not so efficient. Has anyone else had this kind of problem or any idea as to what the problem might be?

The ignition switch is worn out on the linkage in it that locks the steering.jiggleing the steering and all is not a fix,it is just a way to get it to snap and unlock. The only solution for this problem is to replace the ignition switch.

Yes, insert the key, jiggle the stearing wheel, then turn the key, holding down the brake. Get a new factory key made by a lock smith shop. It is worth it!

First off the car is ten years old! Not trying to be sarcastic but wear and tear look at the key and see if its worn afterall it is metal metal contact over a ten year period. At some point you will need to make a dicision replace the part or start looking for a newer car. good luck

Its a theft deterrant. Do not jiggle the steering wheel, turn it slightly in the direction it will let you, and you may need to step on the brake too, to prevent children from starting it.

The ignition lockout switch is bad. They are inexpensive but a pain to replace.
