There have been many phenomenal actors, but after giving it some thought I'd say Edward Norton. Just look at the range of personalities he plays and fools us (well me anyway) all the time. Primal Fear with Richard Gere --Edward Norton outdid Gere! Then Fight Club -- Ed outdid Brad Pitt.
Of course now that I'm praising him I can't think of the names of any of the movies he was in One was about a robbery where he played a mentally challenged guy, which was just an act, and ended up taking off with all the money from the robbery, getting on a bus at the end.
