I think that since most Americans are not actually 'in' the war and are don't face the risk of dying in it, we/they can afford to be bold and brazen and cheer on the troops. I see the soldiers in at least two different groupings (but I may be wrong). One group is the soldiers who were in the service before 9-11 and they were there to protect the country and all the usual noble motivations. The other group consists of those who enlisted after 9-11 because they were led to believe, as the rest of us, that America was under attack and that Iraq was the one spearheading the movement. I have sympathyfor both groups, as I believe they've been misused. But this all gets back to the original theme - if you're not the one in the war, it's easy to be bold and brazen and not worry about the details.

Any death in war seems a tragedy, because it is. Just because someone voluntarily enlisted doesn't mean their death shouldn't be lamented. The fact that news travels very fast these days probably has something to do with the amount of people that mourn these losses. The US Civil War saw the deaths of 670,000 Americans. Any death should be given the recognition that it deserves, regardless of the reasons.

this is my personal opinion but i think (and if you are one please take no offense but i think theirs too many extreme liberals in the world. also if you look at it there has been much worse times in history.such as,as you stated, WW2,the revolutionary war was the war with the most casualties in the history of the us.also there is the dark ages and the time of the black plague. so ,yes i agree with you .

I doubt that number matters to the people who have lost family members.

I don't fully understand your point, but regarding your question, I believe Americans are not being sensitive enough, otherwise they would've already stopped it.
