I have to say- I'm kind of sick and tired of taking my car into the shop "EVERY WEEK" litterally for six months now. So- Last week- I've been just driving it around! I fixed everything the mechanic said was wrong! Is anyone else driving with it on too? Or is it tough luck with me?

Well basically when you have an indication CHECK ENGINE in you car it means you should bring it to the authorized service center. Don't bring it to those small car shops because small shops don't have proper equipment or computer to diagnose your car. The CHECK ENGINE indication is coming from the computer box if they don't have the proper diagnosing computer its hard to pin point the problem on your car. Also you are not supposed to fix it by trial and error the possibility is that your problem could become worst Unless you have a computer to diagnose you car and you are technically knowledgeable.

It could be a verity of things if it is a newer car you should be able to hook it up to the computer port to Identify the problem it could be a bad sensor. Check with the vehicle manufacture to see if any recalls maybee out for your vehicle. I really cant say with out knowing specifics it can be as simple as forgetting to tighten the fuel cap it can cause the engine light to come on in some cars.

That has happened to me before. Make sure your gas cap is on correctly. With my current car, I took the gas cap off and put it back on. After I drove for a few miles the light went off.

I had a car years ago that the light stayed on all the time. We never could find that cause.

But try the gas cap before you take it to the dealer and have the light disconnected.

Has the code been cleared? If they fixed it and there's no other problems, then have the code cleared. You can do this yourself by disconnecting the positive battery cable from the post for about 5-10 seconds, depending on the year model of the car.

It really depends on what the code is for that light---Autozone will read your codes for free, so at least you know what the light is telling you. Some can be ignored for a long time, others you need to deal with.

Have you checked to see that your gas cap is on TIGHT?

The check engine light relates to your emissions system. Something as silly as the gas cap not being properly tightened can cause it to light up. As long as your vehicle seems to be performing well, I wouldn't bother with it.

Had a similar problem and it seems as though the gas cap was creating a air pocket and so keeping my check engine light on.You may need to replace your gas cap!

in most cases driving with the light on wont cause any major damage (you may be hampering your fuel mileage tho) if the light is flashing the vehicle should not be driven, when flashing this shows catalyst damage (can be damaging your cat converter) you should have it inspected and repaired so you have proper performance
