Actually, someone above said Dems could take the Senate but not the House. I think it's vice-versa.
Anyway, all experts agree that the question isn't if Democrats will gain seats, it's how many seats will Democrats gain.
For the Senate to change hands, the Dems must pick up 6 seats:
Here's what I think:
Rhode Island: Barely Safe Republican - but not as big a deal because Chafee votes with Dems on social issues.
Pennsylvania: Democratic Pick Up - Santorum is going to lose his hat, coat, and shoes.
Virginia: Safe Republican - A lot of Dems think a pick-up will happen here. I say Va. is too Republican even when being Republican isn't popular.
Ohio: Barely Safe Republican - DeWine isn't disliked, but the Republican party in Ohio is in shambles right now and people hate the governor and his potential Republican replacement, thus it could switch if the anger is still high and the other offices have coat-tails.
Montana: Possible Democratic Pick-up - Burns is too tied to Abrahamoff to be safe and his opponent has a slight lead in the polls.
Missouri: Possible Democratic Pick-up - Current polls have them in a tie. With the potential for "bonus" points on anti-Republican voting, this could likely switch to Democrats.
All the remaining states will likely stay the same. I see the Dems picking up three to four seats maximum, which would make the next Senate:
52 Rep. - 47 Dem - 1 Ind.
In the House, I think the Dems will pick up 8 to 10 seats, which would make the house:
220 Rep - 215 Dem - 0 Ind. (Vermonts Ind. candidate is moving up to the Senate and likely to be replaced by Dem. Welch.)
So, Republicans will lose seats, but I don't think they'll lose either majority. However, they will be forced to make more compromises - especially in the Senate because the New England Republicans will sometimes vote with the Dems.

Just because President Bush has made errors in his term does not mean that the Republican party is going to get "a hard butt beating." There are still MANY people that still support their ideas (ex. pro-life, pro-gun ownership, etc...) And as for them being "history," I think that is far from the truth. I guarantee you there are still states that are more 'red' than 'blue.'
I think it is sad that America is so politically divided. We are working against each other instead of with each other...

NEVER! Bush has brought democracy to the middle east. Democratic elections for the first time! Republicans will rule for a very very long time. And we're kicking the terrorists butts.

What in the world would make you say stuff like that..The Republicans are going to win the election again and make history ... History will show them winning three consecutive terms .Something that has only been done a few times in the history of the United States.. Please run Hillary.. Please run...

I hope but the current predictions are no. From the way it looks, democrats have a good chance of retaking the Senate but no way in the House.

No chance. Even though most americans are "against" the war, they realize that we will get run the **** over with a demi-ruled house or senate. I think the Yahoo answers community has made it clar that we dont care what you think. =)

Just because you say they will doesn't mean it will happen.
Why don't you read up on the issues and be informed in advance on who you decide you don't like...
Don't base your decisions on a party, base your decisions on the issue. UNINFORMED people vote against those they hate. INFORMED people vote on issues.

I sure hope so --- we need a Democratic Congress right now to stand up to King George and his skewed policies.
