elders??? i know i should be asking this question to the italians, but i want to hear some theories from an american view. ive been living in italy for over 4 years and ive gotten to notice the big diffence, italian old people over 60 tend to be almost always grumpy and pissed off, even at church (seriouly not kidding) than in america where you working at a cash register at a supermarket see this old lady happy and merry doing her groceries... some say it could be because the italians a more difficult life in the past compared to america, i dont know, whats your theory??

marco: your getting the 10 points! you make a lot of sense and it IS true that the more south you go the more kind people are, while the more north you head, the more difficult people are. :)

I have never been to the USA so I don't have a clue how old people are out there.
In the south they are happier people than in the north.
In the north they work like dogs and pay taxes that then go to rome and rome eats the money or the mafia eats it or whatever, fact is it never goes back to the north.
In the south half of the people have 1 or 2 pensions by the time they are 20yo in the north they get their pensions after they worked all their lifes and paid for them so they aren't happy. There's much discontent amongst northeners who are generally different people. The ones who make Ferraris, lambos ducatis maseratis and the rest. Having said that, when all you can do is work work work work, by the time you get old you are just grumpy and don't even know why. But watching the news and hearing that the ones who commit crimes are always from certain parts of Italy certainly doesn't help. Of course I'll get crucified for this, but I have to say I was born in the south and lived there for 19 years and I just like to be fair. Everything the Italians are positively famous for comes from the north, the guns and all the rest is product of the south. The world doesn't know who the "real" italians are and the "real" italians are getting tired of being scrounged on in their own home but there's nothing they can do.....if revolution breaks up you know where you have heard it first. Perhaps in 30 years from now who knows. Fact is in the north we are not reproducing (too busy trying to buy a house first) so it won't matter :-)

My theory is that you are full of it. Why are you trying to add more bull already stereotyped into the Italian ethnicity?

I'm 100% Italian with family both here in America and still in Italy and what you are describing does NOT sound like a single person I know.

Maybe there are some people in their later years that are grumpy because they have lived hard and worked hard to provide better life's for their children yet, even after all that hard work, somehow or another, the occasional ignorant person still arises.

you are right, you should ask this to the Italians. so I'm going to answer it , even though you want American people opinion , i never noticed that the Italian elders are grumpy and pissed off, i mean they are when there is a reason, but Italian in general kinda not friendly to non Italian, so maybe that's why they been that way around you(i don't mean it in mean way though)..i have aunts and uncles that they are in their late 60's and they are fun to be around, but on the other hand i have aunts from my mom side that you would feel like shooting them because of how negative they can be, so i think you cant generalize that theory, because 4 years or 5 or 6 are not enough to judge people.

I'm Italian native and I've read a few answers of yours and if you still use this account, read my comment: you know nothing of Italy.
I live in the north and I don't see that large amount of elder Italians pissed off or grumpy, plus Italy is a country made of very different regional cultures and if you live in Tuscany, then you just know the Tuscans and not all Italians.
I disagree with your best answer who says that southern Italians are happier than us northerners, I'm happy, and I know a lot of happy northern Italians. If you only knew Emilia-Romagna, then you'd see many elder people happy with a smile in their lips.
Stop generalizing Italians as someone from Aosta is VERY different from someone living in Milan, someone from Florence is different by someone from Belluno, and so on.
