"The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William L. Shirer. Fiction: Hitler told gazillions of lies. Horror: Hitler killed millions of people. Drama: The outcome of WW2 was not certain at several occasions during its course. There, you have it all in one book! It's about 1200 pages, so it should take you all summer.

I recommend either The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny or The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon. These are fantasy novels so I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but still very good reads.
