He's 11 days old and I'm wondering how I'll know when he's ready to have his gloves off without scratching himself too much.

He shouldn't need them as long as you keep his nails trimmed. I never used them with either of my kids

I agree with the above answers. My daughter is almost 4 months old, and I never used them. I just have to trim her nails every three days or so, they grow so fast! She's never scratched herself but once or twice. And even then, it was not bad at all.

my son wore his until he was nearly four months old because his hands were always cold. try taking them off and if he seems to be scratching himself put them back on. hey i never had anti scratch mittens when i was a baby and i turned out fine. my son is 10 months old and he still scratches himself.

Well you are suppose to wait about 3-4 weeks to clip your babys nails because they are so close to the nail beds when they are first born...I was very uncomfortable with clipping my first sons nails at all so he wore his for a few months. But if you keep them trimmed or even file them then he will be perfectly fine.

Iused them for about 2 weeks. By that time my daughter had grown enough to were it was easier to cut her nails. It is difficult to cut a babies nails at first because the nail has not grown out from the skin yet and they are very flimsy and soft. I hope that you are enjoying your new son,and enjoy all the wonderful moments to come. Found this site that will aid you as he grows. Congrats to you and good luck!

You don't need mittens! Keep their nails trimmed, every seven days or so, or fold over the ends of sleepers and you will be fine. I don't know of anyone who uses those anymore!

I never put them on my baby, i think they are a waist of money and they are not even cute. Just make sure you keep his nails short and if you are still afraid of using clippers, use a finger nail file that way you don't have to worry about clipping their skin.

My mom had seven children and never used those mittens. She just made sure finger nails were kept trimmed.
