If you are in spontaneous labour having an epidural too early can stop your labour, there are many other forms of pain relief open to you
IMI Narcotics
Gas and air
Hot baths
massage
If you are being induced and they have broken your water and are commencing syntocinon then yes you can have an epidural at that point.

Most hospitals ask you to wait until you are at least 3cm dialated to have an epidural. A lot of hospitals don't even see the need to admit you until then also, because some women dialate 1, 2 or even 3 cm in the weeks before delivery. Good luck with the upcoming birth!

I pretended my contractions were killing me but actually they only felt like bad cramps. I told them I was really sensitive to pain and after they called my doctor, I got an epidural and I didn't feel any pain through the whole thing. I was about 5 cm dilated at that point. I always tell people labor was the easiest part of being pregnant.

it all depends on your doctor hun. how bad the pain is... how dialated you are. most doctors wait til your cervix gets to a certain dialation point and things, before they give you an epidural. Keep taking deep breaths, and hang in there..... the pain will be over soon and you will have the most incredible gift in your arms.

It depends on how far you are dialted. I believe you have to be at least 4 cm before you can get one because anytime before that, it can actually slow labor down. I went until I was at 8 cm before I got mine with my son. But you should talk to your doctor and hospital before the big day. Some hospitals and doctors are different.

Many docs don't give you one until you are 4-6 cm dilated because they don't want to slow your labor down and put you in bed. You might want to ask for an alternative, like stadol to take the pain away. Then when you are farther along and ready to be bed bound you can get the wonder catheter! :)
Good luck to you.

you usually have to wait until you are in good, active labour, because the epi is known to slow or stop labour if it is done too early. but trust me, you can handle it. Good luck!
