it depends on your situation, if you are out all day working a dog could get depressed and destroy your house for you, a cat may be better suited for a situation like that. If you have hair allergies a lizzard, turtle, frog or fish would be a good pet, though lizzards when properly cared for can be high maintenance, turtles carry salmonilla, fact, and fish are temperature and ph sensitive, frogs, I haven't heard many complaints about them. Maybe a turantula suits you, feeding once a week, very little water, low maintenance. A dog is a very good and usually loyal companion providing you get a breed that matches your lifestyle. Cats are more on their own kind of animal and don't need you around all the time, but can be very picky about their food and litter box cleanliness. Fish are nice to look at as long as you keep their water topped up in the warm weather and keep them fed properly, they will last more than a few weeks. Rodents in general don't live very long, but can be affectionate in their own way. A hamster I used to have, actually mother and daughter would both sleep in my overalls front pocket if I went for a short walk, they never bit and would actually lick noses, chins cheeks and fingers, food or no food.
In the end if you are looking to get a pet, think about where you are in life and if you can properly care for that animal with your lifestyle.
If this is just a random question, I have had 12 hamsters, dwarf and syrian at different times, 1 gold fish from my cousin's wedding reception, 2 beta's right now, and 4 cats, 2 a few years ago and a pair of litter mate sisters for the last 2 1/2 years. I have loved my hamsters and my cats, I find it hard to love fish and my gerbils were not companion personalities so we didn't bond.

Ferrets are the best. They are like little cats who actually want to play with you and they sleep most of the day, plus thay can be liter trained. Mine loves to sneak up on my Mom and scare her half to death, he also likes to play with my german shepard puppy.

a cat. They must be kept inside to live long lives, but they are easy to care for. They are fun to watch when they are playful. You don't have to walk them. They will sit on your lap if you like (usually), especially if you lean back in a recliner. They love to have their heads rubbed. They can be very affectionate.

Burmese python. Of course you could then get all the other pets listed to feed to it. ;)

I recommend parakeets (budgies). They're easy to care for,a real joy to have around, and if you're lucky, you can teach it (or them) to talk!
