Feathers are measured in avoirdupois weights, 1 avoirdupois ounce = 437.5 grains and 1 avoirdupois pound = 16 ounces = 7000 grains. Gold is measured in troy weight, 1 troy ounce = 480 grains and 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces = 5760 grains. Thus, a "pound" of feathers outweighs a "pound" of gold by 1240 grains. Since a grain is equivalent to 64.79891 mg (at earth's surface), the feathers outmass the gold by about 80.35 grams.

This is a trick question based on the prefered system of measurements for each. For most items, the avoirdupois system is used, as in the case of feathers. However, precious metals, such as gold, is measured in troy weights. Given that the weight of an avoirdupois pound is greater than the troy pound, the feathers would be the heavier of the two.
This is one reason why we need to start using SI units so we won't have this kind of confusion.

A pound of gold is 12 troy ounces.
A pound of feathers is 16 avoirdupois ounces.
Measured in grams or grains, the feathers are heavier.

One troy pound is equal to 373 grams. A 16 oz. pound is 454 grams. Gold is measured in troy units, so a pound of feathers is heavier.

What kind of pound? Gold is measured in troy pounds and feathers in regular avoirdupois pounds. A troy pound is less so I guess the answer you're looking for is gold.

I never have been good at Math & do concider myself to be accademically challenged sometimes... and especially this early in the morning (00:35)...
But like Jean..
I always thought a 'Pound' was a 'pound' which ever substance was being mesured/weighed, and that a pound = 16 ounces... therefore the answer to you question is: they are..Both the SAME!!
Where grams: which is a metric messure comes into it, I have no idea... But I am intregued to find out..lol

They are both the same, a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of gold. One pound equals one pound.

Precious metals, such as gold are weighed on a mass unit called "Troy." One Troy pound is equal to 373 grams, where as, a standard US pound is equal to 453 grams ... showing that a pound of feathers is actually heavier than a pound of gold!!!

When placed on a scale the feathers would be slightly lighter than the a pound. This is because of the convection currents pushing the feathers up.

their WEIGHT is the same, but their DENSITY is quite different. A pound of gold has a higher density than a pound of feahers. when a pound of gold and a pound of feathers are placed into a tank of water...which has a density of 1, the gold wil sink faster than the feathers, due to the gold's higher density.
