When a tattoo artist puts the carbon copy design on your body to determine what it looks like, what do they use?
What makes the carbon ink transfer from the paper to your body?

Most of the artists I've had used a spray on the skin and then transferred the design to the wet skin. The spray contains witch hazel which causes the pores to close around the design (which is only an outline stencil... the part of the tattoo that will be outlined in black ink). This not only causes the stencil to come off the paper onto your skin, but will also cause your skin to hold on to the stencil ink and not wipe away during the wiping that goes on constantly throughout the tattooing process.
