i have 97 intrepid 3.5 liter. i've replaced rod bearings twice, and still they act as if there not getting oil, and it seems that valves may be sticking, due to lack of oil. I followed directions from haynes manual. this eng has been a nightmare. tho i'm no profesional mech., I'm confident i can fix this, just stumped and need help from a profesional, plz. i know rebuilding is only hope, but cant afford now. any way to get a few more miles out of it? I suspect eng main bearings may need to be replaced to restore eng oil pressure. according to what i have read. the eng. has enough pressure to make the oil light go off, and with the spark plugs removed, just cranking the eng. oil is pumped to the heads, noticed this when i primmed the pump before starting after first re-bearing. overheating caused the bearing to fail first time, am i missing something?

sounds like more than just rod bearings, pressure is created by a restriction of flow, an oil pump creates flow small tolerances create a restriction of flow thus creating pressure, if you have excessive clearance in cam/main/rod bearings this can lower pressure due to lack of sufficient restriction of flow.

If the main bearing are bad it can affect your pressure. Hard to really say this your problem. With a vehicle that have an Oil Gage and if the engine run. You can watch the oil pressure. If, you Rev the engine and see the oil pressure drop, this usually a sign the main bearings are bad. May want to consider the oil pump too, if the pressure seem constant. I wish I could really see the Vehicle and may be able to tell you more. Hard to do like this.
NOW, one thing as there wear over time most machine shops will use a Micrometer to check the Crank Wear. Sometimes it need turned and oversize bearings be used. Wish I could help more.

Have you changed the oil pump

Maybe under running pressure it is leaking by enough to lose pressure

Try putting a High Voluum pump in and see what happens
