You might try Better Propaganda [the address is below, under sources]. It doesn't have a huge amount of artists, but it has a lot of them, especially indie ones, and a few free downloads from every artist.

Other than that, and downloading limewire or some other program which allows you to download things [illegally] and tends to mess with a lot of computers, I would suggest going to an online group of some sort - say, through livejournal or yahoo groups - and finding people with similar music interests. There are a lot of music sharing communities out there, and its really easy nowadays to download/upload songs from sites like sendspace.com or yousendit.com.

Napster is now free to listen to songs on, but doesn't allow you to download them. I think the time of really good free download sites is gone. :(

Myspace is lousy,kazaa downloads to much junk and spyware trackers,in all honesty the free music download era is just about gone.You can try LimeWire its one of the last

none thats really good. Try a p2p program, ares, limewire, etc. Dont forget to also download peerguardian2 to protect your privacy as well.

Stay away from Kazaa... its got some kind of tracker.
