How does the doctor tell? I know he can tell by uterine measurements and through ultrasound, but how does he tell by your uterus?

They can really only guess. They use a mathematical formula that uses the circumference of the babies head, chest and the length of one leg bone to come up with a weight. Since people have all different densities it is only a guess or an average. I was told my 2nd child would be 7-7.5 lbs and he was 9 lbs 1 oz. I was also told my 3rd child would be small as my uterus was measuring 2 weeks smaller than my gestational age. She was 9 days early and weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz.

in some weighs it is an estimate. but it's i believe your gestation in weeks, the length of the baby gives them a good estimate of baby weight. I had to have a ultra sound at about 34-36 weeks with my oldest child due to moving and the woman doing the ultra sound whispered the weight of my child as if not to let me know. they were already predicting he was over 9 pounds. He was 10 pounds 4 1/2 oz at birth. 23" long. I joked that i gave birth to a toddler!

It's called an estimated fetal weight. They take your weight gain, the average weight of a newborn at your stage and any ultrasound measurements if available.

Out of all of the different numbers they come up with their estimate.

From experience of doing this so much they have a good guess. It may not be exact, but, they can be close. They not know the actual weight until the Baby born and they weigh it.

its really an educated guess. they can be off by a lot or they can be right on. an ultrasound is much more accurate if there is some reason to be worried. otherwise just think of it as good fun.

I would not go by this method. I have no idea how they do it but my daughter was supposed to be about 8 lbs and she was only 5 lbs 5 oz.
