A legal abbreviation for "Driving Under the Influence [ of alcohol, drugs, or a combination thereof].

It used to be called DWI, for
"Driving While Intoxicated"

Some States say it as:"DWI" now,
to mean:
"Driving While Impaired"

That's it.

Driving under the influence is DUI. Usually, people charged with DUI drank too much alcohol and drove their car. However, people can also be charged with DUI by driving after taking prescription drugs that may have a side effect of making them drowsy. This means if you drive after taking a medicine for fever, you could get charged with DUI!
