Note that not all gay men have anal sex. Hell, from what I read, more straight people have anal sex than gay people.
Anyway, if it hurts, you're doing it wrong. That's why you need lots of lube and preparation and going slow and stuff.

If you're with someone who cares about you in the least, it doesn't hurt. It's a little uncomfortable the first time, but it shouldn't ever really HURT (unless you're doing it wrong).
As for the why: first of all, the anus is chock full of nerve endings, and the outside can be stimulates sexually on anyone. Secondly, the prostate. Google it or something.

Wow, there are some interesting folks on here. It is not supposed to "hurt", unless you're doing something wrong. There's a little discomfort at first as your body adjusts to what's going on, but after the initial discomfort, it feels really good.
