Israel is attacking Gaza because the Hamas government in Gaza(*) is launching artillery shells and rockets at Israel, and some Hamas gunmen tunnelled into Israel, attacked a patrol, killed two Israeli soldiers and kidnapped a third.  Israel wants the kidnapped man back(+).

(*) The Hamas government denies that the Hamas gunmen are part of "their" Hamas and deny responsibility for them, but they seem to have no problems taking credit for the "successes" of those same Hamas gunmen.
(+) Wouldn't you?

Gaza is an entirely artificial strip of land which marks the ceasefire line going back to the Arab armies attempt to "finish Hitler's work" as they called in, in 1948.

The area was controlled by Egypt until 1967, when the Arab armies lost again in their attempt to destroy Israel. After the 6-Day War (1967) the area came under Israeli control. However to this day, it remains a kind of no-mans land, not part of any country.

The Oslo Accords of 1993 gave the newly created "Palestinian Authority" some control of the area (same as in Judea and Samaria).

Gaza has been basically used as a breeding ground by the Arab world and the United nations, indoctrinating the stateless Arabs of Gaza (and Judea) to hate Jews and the State of Israel.

Last summer Israel forcefully expelled the some 9,000 Israeli Jewish residents of Gaza in hope the Gaza Arabs would be satisfied without have Jews around.

However, attacks are launched out of Gaza every single day into Israel-proper which kill, cause massive damage, send people into shock ... especially in the Israeli town of Sderot which neighbors Gaza.

Last week the Hamas gang, who control the Palestinian Authority kidnapped an Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit. Israel has gone back into the Gaza Strip now to rescue him, and hopefully put and end to the attacks coming out of Gaza everyday meant to kill Jews in Israel.

The Gaza strip is on the east side of the Mediterrainian Sea.

Many Palestinians are settled there, and both them and the Israelis have been fighting for the land for a VERY long time, claiming it's their own.

Gaza is a part of Palestine. It's a narrow strip. It's a coastline of about 40km(25mi) on the Mediterranean sea. It's boundaries with Egypt & of course with the palestinean land occupied by Israel.

Israel claims that the attacks are aimed at exerting pressure on the Palestinian captors of Gilad Shalit to release him.

Why did they keep him?
because they want Israel to release 1,500 Palestinian prisoners.

Israel is attacking them by all means of weapons which the palesineans can't even afford to buy, they also attacked the palestinean prime minister office. The invading troops arrested civilians from the camps & caused the death of many civilians.

Many experts disputed the Israeli claim, suggesting that it’s a false justification for preparations for a full-scale military operation to reinvade Gaza.
