The only wire running to the pole is electrical - it actually has a street light. No wires run from the pole to our house or any other house in the neighborhood. The pole is located about 50 ft. from the street, smack dab in the middle of our lot.

Check your deed and see if you have given a utility easement for the power company. (You did say the only line on the pole was electrical for a street light that was 50 feet off the road) This does not sound like a street light. It sounds more like a security light placed on the lot by the previous owner. Is that possible? If that is the case you can just have it removed. For a city to place a street light that far into your property the previous owner would have to given permission via a utility easement. To find that out check your title insurance and/or deed to your property.

is it just a pole or is it in use?i.e. by the power or phone company? if so they are using eminate domain or have had right of way granted earlier... if this is the case you can probably forget it as it cost quiet a bit to re-wire another pole,,,

Depends how many other people in your block don't like it. In an area near to me, the local residents wrote a petition and sent it to the local MP, and they also left angry notices at the sight as it was being built. I suggest you write to your MP, and encourage your fellow neighbours to do the same, or write a petition. Good luck!

Call the phone company and ask politely if they would mind moving it just on the other side of the property line. If you ask nice, they just might do it.

find out if it runs off of your power. if the light is on... turn off your main breaker. if it turns off, it is on your power and you can take it down. if it doesnt turn off, you are going to have to talk to someone about removing it.
