My suggestion is to wait until he is developmentally ready. This typically happens between 6 and 12 months old. If you insist on teaching him skills his body isn't ready for, I'd go for talking instead...it will be really useful in the future!
Please *don't* leave him to cry. It's not good for him. A baby who cries alone secretes cortisol--a stress hormone--even after he stops crying. So the calories he needs for growth and development instead go to managing stress.
Take him to the pediatrician. Sometimes crying at night is a symptom of an ear infection. The pain may not disturb him during the day when he is busy, but at night--with nothing else to think about--it may. The same is true of any other painful condition.
Could he be allergic to something? Try changing to 100% cotton sheets and see if that helps. Or...if you are laundering his sheets in a different detergent than his clothing, he could be allergic to that, too. Is there anything else that he touches only at night? Or...is there any food that he only eats once a day in the afternoon or evening--that could be causing a food allergy that bothers him at night.
Does he sleep better in your bed? That's something you could try. He may be waking up with nightmares; research has shown that babies who sleep next to a parent don't have nightmares. Also, if is hungry, you can nurse him back to sleep before he fully wakes up, so it will save a lot of time.
Is he cool enough at night? Cooling his room may help.
Maybe he isn't comfortable in pajamas. Try changing to a different style of sleep clothing.
Is his room *completely* darkened? If not, eliminate all nightlights and use curtains or shades that cut out all light.
Is there a lot of noise in his room at night? Try a white noise machine...but don't bother buying a specialty device. Just turn on anything that makes a low hum. An electric fan works well, for instance.

All babies are different and different things work for different families. If you are willing to let him cry it out and feel that is best, you should read the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby"..If that seems cruel to you try "the No Cry Sleep Solution" they are both around 10 bucks. But, whatever you do, if you are going to go with the cry it out thing, PLEASE read up on the subject from EXPERTS first because it's not exactly what you think...you shouldnt just let them cry for 2 hrs and leave them alone. There are VERY specific guidelines that are necessary so that you dont harm them emotionally and psychologically. Good luck!

he most likely is hungry in the middle of the night ,try giving him
a late snack or put him to bed with a bottle of water and he might
drink it and fall back asleep on his own.
my son did not sleep thru the night till he was 6 [ we had snack time at 3am every night ,that would get him thru till 730 am]
if your son is small for his age he could be hungry every few hours..

You need a routine and you need to stick with it. Also, keep your nursery as dark as possible...a nightlight is fine, but that's it. It's possible that your baby has night and day mixed up.
This is the schedule that I use and it works! Get up, have breakfast. This includes cereal, one fruit, and a bottle. Play for awhile, have lunch by 11:00 (a vegetable and a bottle), nap by noon, bottle when he wakes up, then another solid food at dinner time.
Keep him entertained, especially after the dinner hour to get him really tired. Also, feed your baby as much as he will take, without vomiting, before he goes to bed.

My daughter didnt sleep at all for like the first three months of her life. So first of all I sympathize. One day she just did. Just a few things that might help....
Nothing with sugar after like 5pm.
Nice warm bath with that sleepy bubble lavender stuff in it. (I think baby magic sells it...check the baby soap aisle)
Give them a security object (blankey, toy, etc...)
One of those nightlights that are like fishbowls where the fish swim inside.
Warm milk.
This one was hard for me...let them cry it out. With some kids this just dont work. And when you want to sleep, crying isnt what you want to hear. Just try it for one night. As long as they are dry & not hungry, this wont hurt them.
I layed my daugher on my chest & she slept on me...this did help.
Best of luck to you.

He's full, dry, clean and burped? try Cocyntal homeopathic drops for colic and fussiness. About 10 $ for 30 but well worth it. Could baby be teething? There are homeopathic drops for that too. Google (or Dogpile) for more info.
Tried the rocking? singing? car ride? swing? warm bath? bouncy chair? pacifier? Try giving baby to someone else to get to sleep because if you are stressed the baby will pick up your vibes and be fussy too.

My 5 month old still sleeps in his carseat/carrier and his swing. He doesn't sleep in the crib yet. He rolls over too much and wakes himself up and I'm too scared he'll suffocate. Maybe you could try the swing or a bouncy seat.

my daughter didn't sleep through the night until she was about ten months. i finally got so fed up i had to let her cry it out. i rubbed her back every fifteen minutes until she was calm and then when back to bed listened to her cry for another fifteen minutes then rubbed her back, and so on until she fell asleep. it was torture and it took about six days but it worked.
