My 4 year old son (yes, he's too smart for his own good) locked my bedroom door, and tried to "fix it" by using his daddy's screwdriver and taking the doorknob off. The problem is the locking mechanism is still stuck in the door. How do I get it out without breaking the door down?

in the center of the the doorknob is the locking cylinder, or tumbler, using a small thin screwdriver, put it in the cylinder and turn it left, it should unlock it, then you should be able to slide the pin out of the door jamb, good luck

The knobs turn a center opening that pulls the strike away from the door frame.

Stick a screwdriver into thje center of the locking deal, and turn it side to side forcefully.

Once the door opens, remove the lockworks by taking the screws out of the side of the door and sliding the lockworks out.

Can you put the handle back on? If not, you should easily open the door, without the hndle, by pulling back on the latch portion of the latch. This is what u see with handle removed.
Hard to explain, not knowing exactly what is there in door and what is not.
