Nitric acid (HNO3) is a strong acid, meaning that in solution it disassociates completely into ions.

HNO3 ---> H+ (aq) + NO3- (aq)
1 mole of HNO3 dissolves and breaks into 1 mole of H+ and 1 mole of NO3- ions in solution.

The first + after the H and the - after NO3 are superscripts.
