If you read it in 1960, it can't be "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry"--it was published in 1976. The only other book that jumps to mind is maybe Erskine Caldwell's "Tobacco Road," which was published in 1933.

That sounds like Rolling Thunder Hear My Cry. I could be wrong though. For the record, the new PC term for those "colored people" of which you speak is African-American or Black. We haven't been colored or ***** in
four decades.

If it's also about colored people, it might be Rolling Thunder Hear My Cry. I'm not sure though.

One of Lois Lenski's books--- Judy's Journey, perhaps. I loved those books.
