Pixels are the points of phosphors that light up when hit by the beam of the electron guns in the monitor.
.264 refers to the pixel size. The smaller the pixel size the sharper the picture.

Pixels are just like pictures in photography. The more pixels the sharper the image is. For example, when you choose 256 on your monitor settings, there are about 256,000 pixels. When you choose 24 bit, there are about 24 million pixels. Because, you have more pixels the picture is sharper because the pixels have to be smaller to accomodate the extra ones. These smaller dots make up the primary colors that are used to get the sharper colored images on your monitor. LCD Monitors have pixel pitch to allow you to see the differences between them. The smaller the pixel pitch number, the sharper the image on the monitor. Your video card plays a hand in getting the best image too.
