1. The first thing he did was stop the PAY AS YOU GO system that Clinton used to balance, and keep balanced, the budget in the 90s. Btw, he stopped that BEFORE the war so he never intended to keep the budget balanced. The repigs are notorious for robbing the government when they have control.

2. Cheney quote, "...deficits don't matter..."

Obviously you are a democrat, i am a independent, liberal on some ideas and conservative on others, so first thing is first, Bush came into the white house with the stock market way way down and with the country in a deep recession,[a democrat was in office before Bush], guess what 9/11 happens and we informally declared war on radical Islam, and your probably thinking well informally doesn't cut it or bush just found a way to go war for oil and all that crap, here is the thing if you know anything about Geo politics or a large world view on politics, you cant formally declare war on a people that does not have a established government that's the reason why it was informal, guess what we went to Iraq because they broke over 10 resolutions with the UN security council, so we popped them hard, and come to find out they did have WMD's, within the past 2 weeks, experts say that most of these canisters, the mustard gas was in, that they date back as far as before Desert Storm and we also found out that good ol' Saddam had ties with The Taliban and Al Queda, there are authentic documents that prove this and guess what, this war that we are fighting, is costing us over i believe last estimate was over 3 or 4 billion every week or 2, that is the reason why the national debt has rose tremendously, but to answer your question there was never a surplus of money, and the national debt has went up because of 9/11 and the war we are currently fighting to keep the people in the United States like me and you free so we can talk on the computer and converse back and fourth in a FREE COUNTRY

I freakin hate bush..clinton did all that great work to have us finally out of debt and bush comes along and decided to go to war looking for something that wasn't there in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 now he's still spending money in this country trying to help them so he doesn't look stupid for going there in the first place..he needs to resign..worst president ever!!!

Clinton never had a surplus, it was all on paper and was a projected surplus desined for 10 years in the future, far after his term in office. Then we had this little thing called 9/11 happen and the rest is history.

the debt is meaningless, America's creditors cannot and will not ever be able to call in their debts. Also Clinton 'created' the surplus by draining our economy and setting up the country for the 1999-2001 stock market crash

Let me think about this for a minute. Okay, so it didn't really take a minute -- more like less than a second. How about an unnecessary war in the mid-east? That's been sucking us dry for years now. How about pork-barrel projects to his friends in Congress to buy their votes to further his political agenda? How about the fact that he's a total flake? See, lots of reasons. Pick one and run with it.

you idiot, there was never a surplus, only a projested one. overseas spending is what causes debt, and war is the biggest source of overseas spending. perhaps you liked it better when the muslims attacked america once a year, and the president did nothing about it. sure it saved money, but we got attacked ten times while clinton was president, and only once with bush

Because the Bush administration, much to the chagrin of true (and in my mind more honorable) conservatives, is spending money like a liberal on steroids.

Because his administration completely disgraces the name of the classical teddy roosevelt conservative, whom i could respect, and instead they spend every little penny the country gets on war and other pork barrel projects that he and cheney and all of their neocon friends are invested in
