they are not like humans and sleep all night. cows sleep about 2 or 3 hours per day. they sleep lying down. they dont sleep at regular hours. they will lie down and nap maybe twice in each 24 hours. they do not all sleep all together at once. one or two will nap while others keep watch, it's a survival instinct.

I lived on a dairy farm the first 20 years of my life, and to be honest, we tried but except for young calves, we never were able to find a cow asleep. That doesn't mean they don't, and I am not at all disputing the answer given above, since we couldn't watch them 24/7. But, that answer sure sounds right, since I am sure they are light sleepers.

When the sun comes up usually. Interesting fact though, in Western Australia they refused to accept moving the clocks back and forward for daylight saving as it would disrupt the cows and sheep sleep.

I'm not even convinced that cows sleep, actually. They sort of doze in patches all through the day.

6am BST. I think that's right. I mean actually really, that's why we have BST still. But, obviously that's only in the summer. Well it is the same in winter but the clock would say an hour later.
