July 4th many Americans will be celebrating in one way or another. Do you feel a majority will celebrate with the true meaning of the day? Or is patriotism a thing of the past for America and it's citizens?

Most Americans see the 4th of July as just a great day for hotdogs and fireworks....and a day off work.

Thomas Jefferson once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." That time is way overdue.

Americans need to be better patriots. Politicians don't want us to vote: the larger the voter turn-out, the less chance they have of re-election. So they like low voter turn-outs. It serves them well as they continue to suck off the taxpayers' teat.

Meanwhile, they distract us with non-binding resolutions on gay marriage, the New York Times revealing monitoring of terrorist bank accounts, and flag-burning (all real menaces to society).

While we're preoccupied with all these 'important' issues, we're also worrying about things like our maxxed-out credit cards; $3.00-a-gallon fuel for our $60,000 gas-guzzling SUVs; Britney Spears' new love interest; Jacko's pedophilia; "low prices - everyday" at WalMart on junk we don't even need; and the latest rankings of our favorite baseball team.

Like a lazy lobster languishing in a pot of lukewarm water, we're perfectly comfortable - until one day we'll let out a collective scream of agony brought on by our own apathy.

Americans need to get off the couch, put down the remote, and take back their country. Sleazy politicians have long ago forgotten that they're our public servants. But, as long as we allow it, they'll continue to give themselves outlandish salaries; big bonuses; all-expense paid luxury vacations; incredible health and medical beneifts (at taxpayer expense); lifetime retirement pensions unmatched anywhere in the world; and whatever illicit bribes they can get away with taking under the table.

Patriotism isn't a thing of the past...it's just a thing we don't value until such a time that we realize how our grandkids and great-grandkids will be paying off a trillion-dollar debt the Bush administration, with the help of a cowardly, compliant, corrupt Congress, has dumped on the citizenry.

Problem is: if we vote all the crooked Republicans out, we replace them with equally crooked Democrats. It's time for patriotism to rear up and bite these political panderers in the butt. But we're just not quite that uncomfortable yet.

So we'll sip on our six-dollar Starbucks and watch as some goofball swallows a dish of live worms on 'Fear Factor'. That way we don't have to 'get involved' in the business of politics, patriotism, or allegiance to our democracy. Let someone else do all that. We're pretty damn busy....there's a big game on today and I'm going to watch it on the bar's big-screen TV.

Another Boston Tea Party would be appropriate at this time. The Constitution allows us to bear arms against a tyrannical government. But, we're just too damn comfortable to do anything about it - quite yet. -RKO- 07/01/06

Well its not like you see people going around saying yeah man im making hot dogs cause this country is so great and im so happy and im gonna celebrate by eating a bunch of crap and getting drunk....oh wait thats what usually happens...I think that if your really going to celebrate the 4th, get off your bum and go to one of those military cemetaries (excuse the typo) and sit at someones grave and really think hard about all the things they've done to keep your bum out of trouble.

Then go be an idiot and get drunk and blow off a few fingers with some fireworks kids.

Patriotism is not only for Americans! If your country is unjust and cruel even to its own people, patriotism becomes an old story (I still don't want to say lie) which nobody believes...Patriotism is still alive in the poor countries in which people are fighting for their freedom. But unfortunately this is not easy. Because they mostly have no chance to find the correct leadership and unity...

Lets hope patriotism will disappear in the night. That is an excuse for waging war on foreign countries. We should be just as concerned for our fellow humans all over the world as we are for those closer to hand.

Too bad...patriotism is still alive unfortunately. People don't realize it is a cause of wars...if we opened the borders on this tiny small world, we wouldn't fight over em...why can't people get that...well I guess they would rather blow up and destroy the planet then try to be peacefull....but I hope I'm wrong .

i think that many will not rember what this day is for. they might just get some fire works and do it for fun. or some kids might get an expensive firework and brag about it to their friends. remember that is not what 4th of july os about, it is about celebrating that america is a free land!

It is unfortunate, most don't have a clue. they were given the greatest land on the planet and they trashed it.
