Is the monitor old? One of the first signs of monitor failure is that the high voltage power supply kicks off. It will happen more and more often until it dies completely.

Because it probably is 'going to sleep' you can set the sleep timer on the monitor to turn it on or off at particular times, doing this prevents 'burn in' or ghosting on the monitor, as long as it comes back on when you type something, dont worry about it, It is also a way to save power, yours, from your electricty bill if this is at home, because when the monitor sleeps it draws just a few amps of power to keep a little capacitor charged up that in turn starts up the system when you type.

If the montor is going black after it has set for a while with no activity (no keyboard typing or mouse moving), then it is the power setting. Go into the control panel, and the power options icon, there will be a line that says "Turn off monitor after:" increase that time, or set it to never.

Eemm...Does the small LED become turned off aswell? That can be because of a loose connection or a corrupted cable. Check the cable & its both ends on the case & at the back of monitor.
