I've done the trip at all times and in all seasons. I've never had a problem with.it.
The notion is that you will stand on the S.Rim and see a glorious sunrise over the Canyon. You will not.
The sun is coming up behind you and trying to penetrate the depths of a mile deep hole. The best spot to see a glorious sunrise is on SR 64 around 5 miles east and down hill from the Desert View entrance station.
You will literally be looking at 100 mile views. the painted desert and navaho / hopi nations will be spread out before you
How this is done:
vegas to Kingman Az jct US 93 & I-40 90 min get gas
Kingman to i-40 East exit 194 US 89 North [ I thiink the signs says Page ]
2.25 hrs [ Ignore all signs for Grand Canyon that you may see prior to taking this exit ]
Take exit make a left, get in the right lane ,make the right
Gas at the Maverick station on the right side of the street .
89 north to jct to SR 64 at Cameron 1.0 hrs
Left on 64 [ i know the sign says 56 mi. thats to the visitor center} going up hill until you see a sign that says Kaibab National Forest Pull over . 5 hr
Enjoy the view .
take the rest of the day and explore the park
Back to vegas using south entrance station and 64 to williams then 40 west to exit 48
Warning 89 is a well traveled very high speed 2 lane road thriugh the middle of nowhere . be really careful when passing . watch out for others passing
natives drive slightly right.
also you will be on open range where fences are used to keep things OUT have fun and stop believing all those horror movies
BTW you don't need a gun ,and in many places along this route cell phones won't work ,something about mountains. also make sure you bring something warm to wear.once you get past ash fork you will be between 5000 and 7300 feet it does get cool.

Yes, it is safe, as long as your car is in tip-top shape. As you drive away from Las Vegas, you won't have as many lights, strip malls, houses etc. You should bring water, snacks, flashlight and cellphone in case you do have a problem. Lock your car doors. Map out your route. http://www.mapquest.com/
You should log on to the Park Service weblink http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm for current information. For instance, the North Rim is closed due to the recent fires.
I will tell you that the grandeur of the canyon will take your breath away. It's the most amazing, and unexpected sight that you will ever see. Have fun and bring your camera!

Horror movies are not real.
So yes, it should be safe if you drive the speed limit, don't drive drunk, and don't pick up hitch-hikers.
