...then goes into gear. This is a 2000 hyundai elantra (bought used, so no powertrain) and we just replaced the slave cylinder because it was hard to shift (impossible is more like it). I took the slippage test by putting in 3rd & from a stop, let out the clutch to see if it hesitated to die or not..It didn't hesitate. so now where does that leave me? what could be wrong.

Sounds like a clutch, you said it didnt hesitate, when you released clutch from stop in third, but you didnt say if it stalled, no stall and you need a clutch,, unless the pin from slave to cluch fork had an adjustment

Sounds like there is some slippage in your 4th gear itself... maybe its teeth are kinda worn down? If so, it could be quite an expensive proposition since it will entail an overhaul of your transmission box. That's a major repair job, plus the parts of course.

Hope I'm wrong though...
