All I want to do is learn to play guitar. I sit there and practice till my fingers feel like they're falling off...yet to no avail the songs never sound like they should. Does anyone have any pointers? I'm getting so frustrated! I just want to play the darn instrument!!!! :-)

Ok Well First Ur Fingers Need To Hurt So Keep playing Till They Hurt And They Will Start to Get Hard and a Week later They shouldnt Hurt anymore

U Should Get Guitar Books They teach You How To Read Cords Keep Doing the Cords First Do Easy Chords Like A, Am, Am7, G, Gm, E

All thos Easy Ones.
Now If You See a song That You Think is easy To Play First Try Thinking About Wat Chords they Are Once U understand that keep trying and u will have that

I Think The Easyest Thing To Play Is God Father Theme

Its Very Easy

guitar is a difficult instrument to begin on... the learning curve is sharpest at the very beginning... unlike piano.

you have to develope callouses on your fingertips... this will take at leas three days or more. And you have to develope finger dexterity to a much greater degree than on piano (at least at first)

I would suggest limitiing your practice sessions to twenty minutes a piece several times a day... thsi will help you develope calloses faster and keep you from tiring so quickly...

Good chord books are available at every local music store and if you don't read music you can lear by using what the call guitar tablature...

choose stuff you like becasue otherwise you will give up before you get good enough to play it!!!!

If you can hang in there for a couple of weeks you will be over the toughest part and the fun will kick in... most people don't make it that long and give up just before that!!!

good luck!

It really isn't that hard once you get a feel for it. Instead of practicing until your "fingers fall off", just mess around and go with the flow. If something sounds good remember how it felt to play it with your fingers. It probably doesn't sound right because you are trying to play songs mechanically instead of fluidly. Of course, everyone needs to know the basics so that they have a basic understanding. I recommend you buy "Instant"'s Learn to Play Electric Guitar. You can order it online or buy it at best buy. It teaches you the basics at your own pace and makes it fun and easy. Just don't get discouraged and once you get basic scales and chords down, your fingers will play songs with ease.

Well, I found guitar pretty easy, but I had the guidance of a teacher. Trust me, you're probably making it harder than it is.

First, start off learning basic chord shapes and how to shift between them. Start with G, Em, C, D. Put them in a neat little order you find pretty and strum whole notes first, then half notes, the quarter notes. Once you get the hang of shifting, everything else will fall into place.

It takes a long time to get decent at it, sounds like your fingers aren't strong enough... if you have the right hand formatins for chords, and it still sounds like crap, it's proabably because you aren't fretting hard enough, or maybe your guitar is just out of tune, also keep in mind that finding a rythym when you strum can be hard, Not to discourage you, just keep practicing! it took me four years to sound half-a'ss decent so GOOD LUCK.

Try to learn simple three chord songs and keep practicing those for instance a lot of greenday songs use three chords

A good pointer would be not to have high expectations when your first starting out (assuming you are). I've been playing for 12 years, completely self-taught and I'm still learning. It's especially hard for us who choose to forgo lessons. When I first started out it was so discouraging because I couldn't play solos like Slash and almost stopped playing because it was so damn hard. Learning guitar is a progression. You have to start out small and work your way up and you have to be tenacious about it. Its damn hard to get going but just stick to your guns and keep practicing and you'll get there. Just don't think you're going to get there overnight. Hope this helped.

The best thing you can do is go to a tutor. Because you will teach yourself bad habbits. Or learn to play blues chord music, it gets you to use you fingers correct and shape them for the chords. These are called blues scales. But i would go get some lessons from a guitar tutor. I was in a similar position to you and the results show really quickly.

What kind of guitar do you have, and what kind of music are you trying to play? (Punk, Metal,...) For me it took patience. I first played Beatles style stuff, but I hated it so much cause thats not my style. Punk got a little easier, and then after 2 years I can play metal now. Plus you can reall impress people if you get a distortion pedal at guitar center or guitar world stores. They make anything you play sound genius. Oh also try to learn to play guitar tablature. Its like notes for piano but its way simpler. The setup is opposite though. Like instead of having the first string up top, you play it at the bottom.

5--------7----------
6--------7------------
Then you play the number inside of the dashed line on that number fret on your guitar. Hope that helped.

guitar is chalenging because it requires nible fingers.... that is not easy to get over as most people don't use there fingers so riggerously. I played for years and my advise is to do a lot of scales...I know they are boring but you need to break your fingers in. stretch them and move them and play till your fingertips are hard with calase. don't give up, guitar is beautiful!!!

the guy up there is right too....get a stress ball! it helps your fingers
