A divan is a sofa. Pure and simple, however, a divan is only different inasmuch as the back when folded forward to unlock will fold back and the seat and back to make a bed similar to a single. A hide-a-bed or sofabed are some of the names associated with the sofa that when the cushions are removed there is a folding bed in the interior of the sofa that pulls out and makes into a bed. Usually comes in regular, queen, and king sizes. A sofa that does none of these things is just a sofa, a divan folds back into a single bed and the last sofa bed can be a bed of any size. Hope this helps.

In no way is a divan a sofa of any description!
A Divan is a bed which is a solid base...it can be any size & usually comes with a matress as standard.
A standard bed refers to a bed frame which comprises of 4 seperate pieces...1 bed head, 1 bed foot, 1 base (which holds mattress) & the mattress.

A divan is a standard bed base, as far as I know, they can be double, hence the term "single divan" thus distinguishing it from "double divan". It may mean something else in American, I don't know.

A Divan is a large couch usually without a back or arms often designed for use as a bed.
"The word is recorded in English since 1586, meaning "Oriental council of state," from Turkish divan, from Arabic diwan, from Persian (itself possibly from Aramaic) devan "bundle of written sheets, small book, collection of poems" (as in the "Divan i-Hafiz"), related to debir "writer." Sense evolved through "book of accounts," to "office of accounts," "custom house," "council chamber," then to "long, cushioned seat," such as are found along the walls in Middle Eastern council chambers."
Or this if you meant "davenport":
"davenport
2 : a large upholstered sofa often convertible into a bed "
