I teach an acting class and I wanted to use some books to make scenes out of for my girls to use. So far, I've used Judy Blume & Beverly Cleary as well as more classic authors like C.S.Lewis & Louisa May Alcott. Can you help me come up with more titles that might work?

So far, good suggestions. I need books that will have dialogue between 2 girls as I have no boys in my class. Thanks!

I loved the Beverly Cleary books at that age--great choice.

Also, the Ember books are pretty popular, they're by Jeanne DuPrau. They'd provide some cool scenes.

Some classics??? The Secret Garden comes to mind, along with the Wrinkle in Time books. Hmmm. Some classics might be too "adult" for that age group.

Harry Potter books would be a big hit, along with the Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.

The Warriors series by Erin Hunter are still a big favorite of mine, even though I've moved into the young adult area.

Love anything by Roakd Dahl. Funny, and simple to act.

The only mystery books I can think of are the Sammy Keyes books by Wendelin Van Draanen. They're a lot of fun.

Anything by Sharon G. Flake might be cool.

Besides those (great ones by the way), there are also the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace. The girls get a little older with each book, but the ones appropriate for 9-12 are Betsy-Tacy, Betsy-Tacy and Tib, Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill and Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown.

There are the Shoes books by Noel Streatfield, all about girls, a lot of theater/acting references...my favorite being Dancing Shoes (amazing book, also has acting references and I could easily see it being used for making scenes). Theater Shoes (also another good one), Party Shoes and Ballet Shoes are choices as well.

The Secret Language by Ursula Nordstrom also comes to mind, about girls in a boarding school. Loved that book at that age.

Other books starring girls...Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh and Dynamite Dinah by Claudia Mills. The classic A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

The Diary of Anne Frank (although that may be a bit "intense", especially for the younger ones)
Anne of Green Gables - Lucy Maud Montgomery
The rest of the "Anne" series - these are classics, too, although the later ones are not quite as good. The first few, however, are excellent.
Misty of Chincoteague / Stormy of Chincoteague - Marguerite Henry

Personally, I think "classics" are better for your purposes; they don't become obsolete so easily, and they will expose the girls to acting in a wider range of periods, and a wider variety of scenes.

I'm an Aussie so author Robin Klein springs to mind for girls of that age group to me, she's very well known here. One of her books - Hating Allison Ashley recently got made into a movie too. Good Luck!

I have a FABULOUS book to recommend, published many times over...it is called "Half Magic" by Edward Eager. Mr. Eager has delighted me since I was 9 years old ...his other books are good too however this is MY favorite and even as an adult, I recommend this book....it is about a half magic nickel that siblings find and they learn that they must wish Twice for what they want of only get half of their wish...it is funny and a fairly quick read. I really hope that you check it out.

There was a wonderful series in our elementary school library. One of the titles was "Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots". I'll look it up and edit my answer.

Ah Ha, the Adventures of the Bailey School Kids by Debbie Dadey and Marcia T. Jones

I would suggest some Meg Cabot books and the Percy and The Olympians Series. I used to love those books.
