People usually remained fully clothed on the beach in the 1800s - sunbathing wasnt seen as acceptable!
Most seaside resorts had entertainment like punch and judy shows, donkey rides, the pier/music halls, variety dancing although most went for health reasons (it was believed that the sea air could cure many illnesses)
