Drive Pacific Coast Highway to LA, and Highway 5 back.
Stop at Hearst Castle. That is 2.5 days of very cool stuff and gorgeous scenery.

Beautiful Monterey's Cannery Row is a must see. While you're there visit the fabulous Pebble Beach Golf Course. The Monarch butterflies return there every year like the swallows return to Capistrano. Drive on south to Carmel (maybe you'll bump into Clint Eastwood) and visit their wonderful shops, then on down to Big Sur and eat in their outdoor restaurant just off the ocean. Then its on down to San Diego where there is more to do than you have time for...the famous San Diego Zoo, Old Town, their Art Museum, the Planetarium, beaches, fantastic restaurants and sooo much more. If you can work it in, take the drive up to the incredible town of Julian in the nearby mountains, stopping on the way to buy the most fantastic baked goods in the universe at the famous Dudley's Bakery which sits right on the highway on your way there.

I grew up in California and have lived in almost every major city and I honestly have never heard of Mariposa. You should go to Sacramento or Tahoe. It will be hot but the scenery is breath taking. Go to some of the national parks like Joshua Tree or the death valley. Disneyland is always fun. If you are into adventure I would have to say Tahoe or Sacramento. You can go white water rafting on the river or rent a boat or jet skis on the lake. Catalina Island is great too for kayaking.

Most definitely you have to travel to Monterrey Bay and Carmel area. Yes, it is kinda ritzy, however, there is a lot of great scenery and reasonably priced restaurants.
If you like to exercise and hike, then go to Yosemite National Park. Being one of the most popular National Parks it is inhabited my a lot of tourists. What most of these tourists don't know is that there are alternate routes around the valley. My favorite spot in Yosemite is Tioga Pass. When you're there, you're with people that are doing the same thing as you-- enjoying life. You'll see several pristine lakes and numerous vistas. You can even travel far enough and get to see the Sierra Nevada Range...Beautiful.
Have Fun and Hope This Helps!

first thing i would suggest is that you have a triple a book and map of Ca.. you have to drive the down the monterey pennisula along the pacific coast highway...breathtaking views of the pacific...THE MOST beautiful drive you will ever take in the U.S.. Visit hearst castle and spend a night in solvang...its a little danish town as I remember. then head on down to LA and drive east to palm springs and spend a night or two there and hit the water park...you will love it in the heat. then you HAVE to drive to san diego and as soon as you get into north county head west for the pch again, drive south to la jolla and spend a night...shops , beach, ocean. from la jolla you pick up the 5 south and explore the city of san diego. take a ride down to the border...about 30 miles, and explore tijuana... dont drive into tj.. take the trolley out of s.d.or drive there then park and walk across the border...while you are there go see a bullfight! good luck and have a safe trip.

So, let me get this straight, you are a pair of murderers and you want to know who to kill on a 6-night spree of violence? Or is it half a dozen medieval knights you're topping and you've missed off the k? Sorry, much as I loathe the septics, I just can't condone this sort of thing. I suggest you and your sick friend get professional help from an anger-management specialist at your local secure psychiatric hospital.
