It was 2 years ago. People were throwing fits because Winston is a cigarette sponsor so the new name went to the highest bidder. Nextel is all right but I miss it when it was the Winston Cup but like everything else in life, NASCAR changed... SIGH

about 2 years ago. I have been reading articles recently that say that next year it will be called the sprint cup because of the merger of nextel & sprint. I hope this will be the last change for a long time I've really just now gotten used to saying Nextel Cup instead of Winston Cup!!

The first season of the Nextel Cup was ran in 2004. There was of course a lot of critics for the sponser being RJ Renyolds and it had gotten to be a lot of money for the tobacco company in the midst of also settling thousands of frivelous lawsuits. The Cup series actually started off as being called The Grand National Series.
Now Sprint has bought out Nextel and the top series in NASCAR will be getting a new name.

2 years ago. While the sport was growing exponentially, they needed to get a more healthy sponsor than a cigarette company.
