Because students should know that the education is not cheap (in a sense) to achieve. Today students try to buy or achieve anything they want to have instantly or sometimes later. Education is not like some material or food. You have to go through all difficulties including financial and hard study work. Once you achieve the point of completing the degree, you will feel the beauty and fullness of your happiness. People who understand the healthy of the education ahead do not mind to pay and start enjoying every step of their learning. Please verify with people around you who acheived that level in the world! Education is the only wealth will make you stand pride wherever the world you go! Good Luck!

It's the law of supply and demand, sort of. It's in high demand. Everyone wants a degree. We all want good degrees. Plus, my generation is accustomed to a certain lifestyle that we'd rather not give up just because we're in college. Most of us had our own bedrooms and are not accustomed to sharing a bedroom with one person let alone a bathroom with about 20-30 people. So, colleges build dorms with private bathrooms and other amenities. It all adds up.

Because it's hard for a college to:
Heat the buildings
Cool the buildings
Keep the buildings in good repair
Clean up after y'all
Pay teachers
Pay cooks
Pay maintenece men
Pay librarians
Pay teacher's assistant
Buy food
Buy (and replace) tables/desks
Buy (and replace) chairs
And a whole bunch of other stuff. It takes a lot of work to run a college.
And, it's an investment.

only 1/3 of the population gets a college degree. it has to be expensive. between expenses, hassles, classes and course work, its how they weed out the bottom 2/3. you have to pay your way. it costs a lot to invest in your human capital.

College is expensive because it is an investment in your future. Educators want to ensure that you are serious about your education, so if you are paying big bucks, you are more likely to appreciate you education and make better grades! Tuition is just to make sure that you are a serious about your career as you think you are... Or maybe it's just another tactic of the man....just joking,,,,do not take that last comment seriously.

Because it costs a lot to build the buildings for classes and to hire all the professors.
Here's a website with additional reasons:

It is not the college's fault, it is inflation, and everyone must pay their way in this life. There are no free rides.
