Ok this is weird, i have only had nmy computer about 18 months but I am now having problems with the fan which makes a hell of a racket. At first i thought it was due to the extrem heat we have been experiencing but then it never did this last summer!

Also is it not all the time, and if I do a systems restore, it seems to sort the problem out. However this only lasts for a few days and then it starts to do it again.

I am wondering if there is a bug in windows XP itself that i am not aware of, as surely if it was directly hardware related then a systems restore wouldn't help at all.

I have never ahd this problem with my previous computers so I am wondering what the heck is going on. Any advice would be appreciated.

Which fan? If the CPU fan, it's easy to change for a quieter one. Unclip the old one and unplug the power cable. clean the top of the CPU, apply new paste and install the new fan. Plug the power cable back in and you're done.
If it's a case fan, that's easy too. unplug the old one, unscrew it and screw in a new quiet one. Plug it in and it's done!
If it's the power supply fan, change the PSU!
There's only a small connection between the noise of a fan and the operating system. Certain systems do try and control the CPU speed depending on the demands on the processor. This in turn reduces the heat generated which may cause the CPU fan to run less.

I replaced may CPU cooling fan a couple of years ago and all is well. First make sure it is your fan. This is a easy fix.

Software has absolutely nothing to do with the cooling fan.

It's either dirty ... or what you hear isn't the cooling fan but the hard drive. Try using the disk defragment tool.
