I'm thinking maybe two to five years in jail. It could be something he benefits from directly but it would be better if it was something that some really evil person paid him to do. (Paid him a lot.) I need to be able to say he was arrested for hacking into ----------and (stealing) (destroying) (tampering with) (altering) (other) the-----------------.

This is fiction but I want it to be believable. Any suggestions?

ok this might sound corny at first, but go watch "swordfish" if you haven't already - thats exactly what you're looking for. now go watch "the in-laws" - that will give you a lot of information, because i realize you dont want to copy an idea from a movie. try something with a high-power black market arms dealer wanting access to some type of US military information - maybe someone leaked that the US is prototyping a new vehicle or something of that nature. the Dealer wants to know specs about it, where it is, what kind of security they have guarding it, etc. he kidnaps someone that is capable of hacking the system to get the information. if you want to have fun, they hack the system, steal the vehicle, and sell it to someone else, then the hacker steals the money from the dealer that he was kidnapped by and transfers it to another account. like i said, "the in-laws" will give you some good ideas about the espionage part, and "swordfish" will cover a lot of the hacking areas. good luck!

Hack the satellite feed from the White House and insert a digitally created "Presidential speech" which is broadcast live...and they can't stop it because they no longer control the satellite. The "speech" could be anything that would fit into your story, from a declaration of war to an admission of murder.

Ummm...last I heard you'll get two to five years for discussing it in the wrong places;-) You might try searching news items for the terms computer theft, identity theft or computer crime. They'd give you more realistic data, I think.

Maybe identity theft? He could steal credit card numbers. You could flesh it out a little.
