They have to make sure there is no chance of thunderstorms because when the shuttle takes off it's so ionized it attracts lightning. That happened to the Apollo 12 mission as it was taking off. The source link is a listing of pictures from the Apollo 12 mission - the lightning strikes are under "Saturn V launch."
