It's not dangerous when you are under the supervision of a doctor and taking the prescribed dosage. However, it can have the side effect of making you feel like you're "on a trip" which is why it is important you don't drive while taking it or do anything else important!

My mother found out the hard way that she was allergic to codiene. She ended up in the ER after taking some cough syrup with that in it. So it's only dangerous if you're allergic.

Didn't you get a drug sheet explaining this? Codeine is a narcotic and addictive, but it'll sure help a cough. Try to just take it at bedtime so you can sleep without coughing and it won't matter how you feel. But if you have any tendency toward drug or alcohol abuse, dump it down the drain, please.

The same thing happens to me... try only taking 1/2 of the recommended dose or less, you should feel better.
