If the car is registered in his name, and the insurance is on that car. You can own the car (pink slip) but the insurance has to be on the registered car, also if the car is registered to you, the insurance has to be on that car to be legal.......

If the insurance company has insured the vehicle I am pretty sure that there is nothing illegal about this.

yeah. that's fine. your friend has your permission to use this vehicle (verbal contract)..and as long as you don't report this vehicle stolen...no harm, no foul. :)
