dip the necklace in lemon juice (real lemon juice not the kind that comes in a bottle)...if it doesn't turn black, then it is gold, if it does it's fake. Gold can withstand acidic solvents, fake crap can't.

There are many kinds of fake gold necklace. Try to put it near a magnet, if you fell how it's attracted be the magnet then it's fake or (you probably won't like this] scratch it, if it's loosing the shining surface, it's fake. Or you use an ancient method, take a piece of gold (if you can) that should be heavy like a real gold necklace (that is identically with the one you are trying to find out if it is), then put the piece in a glass of water and mark the water level, after that put the unknown necklace in the glass and look if the level of the water is the same as the mark one and "Evrika" you will know the true. Or tell us where did you get it, I'm sure we will be able to say if it's real or not, or you can go to a jewelry and ask the seller.

If it is real gold, it should be stamped some where on it. If may be 10 caret or 14 caret, it could be higher but probably not as the higher numbers are higher in Gold content but lower in strength. You are very unlikely to find a pure Gold necklace anywhere unless you have it made.
There are also Gold plated and Gold filled products. Both of these do have some Gold that has been applied to another metal.

Chemical test is the only way, without destroting the necklace. Weight is another good way but not absolute. Also take a pretty strong magnet to it and thats useally a quick giveaway. If you feel good enuff, take a scalpel blade and slice a piece-of-pie shaped wegde out of the necklace, (if appl.), and study that piece.

Real gold will not turn your neck green unless you are allergic to gold. Fake stuff turns colour and will make green marks on your body. Gold depending on krts the highest you can go is 24 any thing higher is to soft and the colour is darker and shinier.

Wear it a couple of days, or rub it onto the palm of your hand (a little sweat actually helps). If you notice your skin turning green where the necklace lay, it's not real. Or you can take it to a jewelery store and ask them, they'll know.

you have to do the displacement thing. Find out how many carats it's meant to be, i doubt it's pure gold cos that's way too soft ot make a necklace then weigh the necklace and calculate it's volume

Measure the mass on an electronice balance.
Measure the volume in a narrow measuring glass.
Calculate the density by mass / volume.
100% gold should give 19.3 g/cm3

The fastest way that i have found is if you are wearing base(as in makeup base) rub it on the area of skin that is covered by it and if the makeup turns black instantly it is real gold.
