I just installed a K&N OEM replacement air filter in my 1997 honda Civic CX. I can't tell a difference in performance at all... It idles much lower now, and runs hot on the highway. The temp guage is 70% now and before the new air filter, it was always around 25%. I'm thinking of taking the air filter out and going back to the paper filter. Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do to fix it ?

K&N filters are great. All you have to do is clean and oil them every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. You might want to check the mass air flow to see it the computer needs reprogramming. Also see if you knocked loose a vacuum hose or forgot to replace a breather hose. If you are heating up at high speeds (70 to 80) or when climbing a hill, then check the radiator cap. Also check and make sure you didn't somehow disconnect the temp sensor and it isn't grounded against the engine.

installing a air filter should not affect Eng. temp.try swapping back to the oem and see if it goes back to normal. as far as power just a filter will add some power even though you cant tell, you could try a cold air intake kit which comes with a filter and intake tubes, to get the most from either of these retros, a high performance muffler and possibly tubes should also be done

It it just a replacement or cold air tube also ? you may have a sensor that was left out of the air inlet that has to be there, just freeing up air flow will not do what you say, try the other filter. I dont think it is a filter problem.

K&N air filters are top line. It sounds like when you replaced it you put something back together wrong. I have one on my dodge ram and it helped with throttle response fuel mileage and performance. Changing your air filter should have no effect on temperature.

stick with paper filters!!! filters like K and N require constant cleaning and oiling. It should not affect your engine heat though. see if you accidently cut the wire to your aux cooling fan on your radiator while putting that filtr in. also it would be a good idea to replace your thermostat. that should help you out.

Sounds like the filter might be too restrictive, and you're being air-starved.
