I have a GM 4.3L 6cyclinder. It has been serviced regularly. What is the longest you have seen one last?

It should outlast the rest of the engine. I have a customer with an 88 Aerostar that has a chained engine, he has 580,000 miles on the original engine!! No lie. The chain is not something you should be concerned about. Just keep doing your regular maintenance.

timing chains can last the life of the engine if the oil is changed regularly (every 3-5000 miles). On the other hand, timing belts. (replaced chains in the newer engines. usually have to be replaced every 40-50000 miles or so to prevent stretching , strippimg or breakage. That can mess up your engine

Hi Moontreker,
Well , its hard to say . Really depends on how you drive .
You floor it alot , the chain may not last 50,000 miles .
But if you drive it normally, it could last 125,000 miles if serviced right. If you hear a rattling at idle and it sounds like the water pump area , it may be too loose and needs to be checked out by someone u trust.

If the motor is driven properly, smooth acceleration, warm-up time etc. It is usually a lifetime part. You diddn't give enough specifics for a more detailed answer. Year, Miles, how many owners.

there is no expected life from a timing chain. It should last the life of the Eng. 150-200k miles is a good life expectancy from that Eng.
