Any way you want: it's your book.
Certainly you want to record any incantations, chants, songs, that you learn or create. And some record of special events is in order: your initiation, the first time you participate in a larger group than the one into which you are initiated, etc. And include formulas for potions or remedies that you learn. Also include any information you might otherwise forget, such as correspondences of colors with rituals or ritual objects, the proper way to do a purification of various objects, and other bits and pieces of magical information you might want far enough in the future that you can't count on remembering them. In the case of materials in books you own, you might write down the page numbers of certain important references, rather than copying the information into your Book of Shadows. Or you may want to copy the whole thing.
But you may also want to use it as a diary more generally, with the magical/witchy theme being more the background than the subject. So, for example, observations concerning your friends (and enemies!) are in order, together with ideas for spells.
But remember, you must guard its privacy at all costs. No one should even know you have it, let alone where you store it. If you can keep it private enough, you may want to consider having a Floppy Disc of Shadows instead, or in addition to, your Book of Shadows.

well there are 2 different styles of BOS that i have come across. the grimiore which is a journal specifically for spells that you designed casted and recorded the outcome of the spells
standard book of shadows is a book about rituals. esbats and sabbats that you designed and performed in. and the outcomes of the ritual. there are different kinds of bos too there is the book of shadows for a coven. for which the high priestess keeps and records all that happens to the coven and records the ritual.
then a personal book of shadows that is for yourself for what you do while solitary. i think i still have a easy program for making an on computer book of shadows but i havent checked my files recently and not sure where it is in here.

I lean more towards calling it a book of light, but you can refer to it as anything you want. I recommend checking out Silver RavenWolf's Book of Shadows. You are basically collecting spells you like, or have written yourself and putting them into one area. Write about how you set up your alter and what each candle color means to you and poof you're done. Each book is different and uniquely your own.
