As far as aggressive fish go- Bettas are push overs. Two males will fight if put in a small environment and no means of avoiding each other. Males also tend to "flirt" with females a little too much. Most often females are kept with other female bettas and most other community tropica fish. 1 male can be kept with a number of females if the environment is large enough but normally he annoys them and sometimes may cause a little damage.
Males are often kept with other community tropical fish. Danios and tetras are great. They are small, fast and won't pick on your betta. I would stay away from Barbs they will rip up your bettas tail. Bottom feeders are good tank mates as well. Cory cats, botias, and loaches should all be fine.
You should avoid anything with long flowing fins, it is a risk you don't need to take. Your betta probably wouldn't kill a long-fin danio or a fancy guppy but he may shred someones tail.
Dwarf african frogs and ghost shrimp do well also.
Occasionally you may find a betta with a nasty attitude. He may not be able to live with anyone. There may be another betta who lives comfortably with fancy guppies. The individual personality of the fish plays a role in appropriate tank mates. This is a risk with all semi-aggressive and aggressive fish.

A Beta is an inherently aggressive fish. Most people who want Betas in their main fish tank get Beta Condos. These are small plastic cubes that attatch to the inside of the fish tank and keep the Betas seperate from the other fish. Remember also that betas need a different food, so condos also make feeding easier, ensuring that each fish gets the food it needs.
We had 8 of these on the front of a 50 gallon fish tank. At first the Betas flared and threatened any fish it saw through the plastic, especially the other male betas. After a while though they did get used to each other. When the suction cups gave in we had a school of 8 Beta males swimming peacefully throughout the tank. (Also remember that the reason they are kept in such small spaces is so the fins don't break and they stay bright and "lovely") This school of acclimated Betas did just fine until my sister dropped a female Beta into the tank (smaller and much less colorful). About 3 days after her arrival it was a bloodbath. The 8 males turned on each other and every other fish in the tank except for the new female.

Of course. Though your results may vary.
In a nice 10 or even just a 5 gal tank, some 1" pygmy cories, or endlers may do well. Though not a fish, many shrimp also work wonders. They also have the benefit of eating leftover food and algae.
A betta is a solitary fish, and should be kept as such. Certain fish may be ok with it, but other bettas, or guppies, may be killed.

In tanks 10+ gallons or more you can put most peaceful community fish. Avoid bettas, and fish that resemble bettas like fancy guppies. It really depends on the betta's temperament.

No. The betta will chase, fight and may kill the other fish.
Bettas are Japanese Fighting Betta and they are usually best in small aquarium spaces with lots of places (plants etc) to hide.
