I'm very careful to say some, others are extremely knowledgeable. I have a roommate who actually believes that the whole world needs to know what America does, but America doesn't have to care about what everyone else does. I think thats the self centered thinking that got America to the position that they are in around the world now. So if you can explain to me why it is legitimate for Americans to be ignorant of their fellow world citizens I would appreciate it.

Probally due to taking their privelages for granted. Most Americans dont know what its like to be with out them becaue theyre in a powerful country. Your roomate i have to disagree with her, especially if you plan to live or visit another country. Im not sure if you mean the state America is with iraq is what you were reffering to when you mentioned position it is now, but if it is the states have to be the world police to prevent any bullies taking over smaller countries to avoid another world war. In my opinion at no point in time should we be ignorant of other people's culture's due to being in a country made up of many cultures. But i guess the most reasonable response to your inquiry is everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and speak their mind in this country.

Why some Americans are clueless to what goes on in the world is because in thier mind because of all the technology, alleged freedoms, and out lasting the Soviets to be the de facto world super power. You can do as you please. They say absolute power corrupts absolutly. And I think it is being played out here. Like the bully on the play yard. He wants what he wants when he wants it. And if you don't give it to him, he just takes it. And so long as there are no adults around, he continues. And the other kids(certain nations in this point)feel that they are better off against attack from the bully by siding with him, or at best keeping quiet and being complacent. Many have this dullusion that because Democracy out lasted Communism that is an endorsement that this form of Democracy is the best and evryone should have it if they want it or not.

Here it is all about me, and mine. People here so not care what happens "over there" so long as thier use of the SUV, ipod, cable, mall shopping, employment etc is not effected. The talk is that something need to be done. The suffering of the people needed to be addressed. Millions have died behind wars and such in Sub Saharan Africa but the US hardly looks if only to say "that is terrible. SOMEBODY(not us)ought to do something" Why? Because there are not resources there that America really needs. Darfur does not sit on any major trade routes the US need. there are no enities there that would prove a threat to America -- YET. If Al Qaeda moved into Darfur. It will certainly be in the headlights of Washington then. As long as the creature comforts of America are not effected by the action "over there" people here could care less. They have too much shopping and too many concerts and clubs to get to.

We live so far away from everywhere else (even south America and/or Canada for most of the US) that we just have not had the experience. I'm think i am more knowledgable than most ppl i know, on Europe anyway, since my in-laws are from Liverpool and one of my good friends and her hubby are Irish, but i don't think most ppl in the US even know a person that is from another country (that is not a S. Am country). I know if you live in Englad, Germany, Spain, Italy ect...you can fly to another country in a matter of a few hours and it is fairly cheap. Honestly most Americans would love to be able to visit but it is to expensive.

I also think that the reason we love accents is because we rarely hear them! We would sit and listen to someone from England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia all day....you guys are really popular here lol

Why wouldn't we ignore them we ignore each other....I really don't think (unless there is a hugh tradegy) that we know any more (or less as the case maybe) about a neighboring state than we do about other countries!

well she is ignorant to other cultures, cant really hold her for asking about seasons, im sure people have told her about the middle east and believe all regions are the same. i live in florida for a while i have yet to see winter take place in the area i lived. Most of her comments are just ignorance due to curiosity, if she meant to offend you im sure she couldve came up with better material. Since you never visited the U.S. there are people from all over the world living there. You cant judge a country by one person's action.

This isn't really an answer, more of an agreement. Americans, for the most part, have the opinion that the rest of the world exists to serve us and if they can't do that, they should stay the heck out of our way and keep quiet! Let me make it plain that I, too, feel that this is what will destroy this country and we can only hope that we don't take too many other countries down with us.

Seems like that Americans for the most part don't really care about what is going on in their country, let alone in the world around them. There is no legitimacy, it results from immaturity which accompanies materialism. Sorry most Americans are willfully stupid!

It's called self centered infantilism -- like the toddler who thinks the world revolves around them. I'm sure people from other countries have their own issues...

Well think about it ... are we taught about other cultures and governments in school? No.

Are we encouraged to travel abroad? No.

So there's this mentality that we are somehow superior to everyone else.
