Two reasons--they don't practice them enough and their skill level is overhyped. Just look at how many times Lampard hit the net vs. shot it miles wide in open play. The skill level of most mdoern players is so low now, it's unbelievable people have not noticed. Then again soccer is the world's most popular sport and therefore appeals to the LCDs out there who really need little education to follow it.
But, say, if you went to work and messed up more than half the time like Lampard does, you'd be fired. Not in soccer! In soccer in 2006 that makes you a multimillionaire...how low the game has sunk.
Anyway, this lack of pride in professionalism and practice transfers over to the simplest act--trapping the ball, passing the ball and, yes, even shooting the ball on net with only the keeper to beat.
You revert the World Cup Finals format back to only 16 teams qualifying worldwide...we would not be having this conversation because Land of Eng would not even qualify. You let 36 teams in and you get a whole bunch of crappy ones like Land of Eng and luck of the weak group draw and a nice second rd. matchup...whoa, a terrible side like the overrated Land of the Metrosexuals is in the QF!

Pressure maybe. at the end of da day England got further than atlot of other countries. penalty's arent england gud points but we must have some to have got as far as we did.

Got to give Ricardo credit - he saved 3 and almost had the fourth.
The were't great penalties, but none were all that bad.
I think the real question here, is would Crouch have taken our 5th?
I think we can all be glad we didn't have to see that!

They don't practice taking penalties - because it is seen as a defeatist attitude.
Probably why we keep getting defeated!!!

give the goal keeper credit aswell, what about ac milan v liverpool champions league, they missed, and shevchenko was the world player of the year.im glad they missed anyway or it would have been more bragging
