Beach picnincs-- my kids enjoy packing food, uno cards and other games and just enjoying an entire day at the beach. We eat breakfast, snacks and lunch on the beach. Saves a ton of money and the keys are so beat at the end of the day they go right to sleep.. then mommy and daddy get a little private play time.

Take I 5 southbound to the Dairy Mart Road exit (you'll almost be in Mexico). Turn right on Dairy Mart Road and keep going until you run out of road. You'll be at Border Field State Park, probably the least visited park in the state. Until recently it was a real mess, but in the past couple of years it has really been cleaned up. You'll have miles of white sand beaches - probably all to yourselves. The beachcombing is probably the best in the county. Bring a kite. Bring a picnic because the place is completely undeveloped. You can stand at the southwesternmost point in the United States. There's an old obelisk at the beach marking the border between Mexico and the United States - now split by a fence, of course. The building on the other side of the fence is a bull ring. Most of the park is a salt marsh, with all sorts of wildflowers, birds and other small critters. There are also stables there where you can rent horses and ride along the beach. Enjoy!

I like San Diego beaches the best. It has lots of nice ones. You can take a walk around La Jolla, walk along the cliffs past the Cave Store off Coast. Blvd., the Cove, Scripps Park, Shell Beach, the Casa Beach, and some people find shopping on Girard St. fun (not me however). A walk on the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach is nice, or the Ocean Beach Pier, or the Imperial Beach Pier, as well. Do not body womp at Marine St. Beach in La Jolla or swim at or near Windansea, the beach just past the Casa in La Jolla is magnificent. Enjoy.

Torrey Pines park has hang gliding. If the wind is strong enough, they have two seaters, where the pilot will take a passenger. The wind was never strong enough when I was there. The wind hits the cliff and the gliders just soar in the updraft. It is about a 200 foot cliff that you jump off to start. Certainly, it is something different.

There are some really good views of Mission Bay that can be found from different parks on the south face of Mount Soledad - try Kate O. Sessions Park on Soledad Road (get there from PB). good picnicking with a nice view. also, fun with a playground, and large grassy areas for running around and sports.
also, there's a puppet theater in balboa park:

We go to the mtns. If the weather is decent, we hike on trails in the Cuyamacas.
If it is hot -- we'll drive a bit after sundown, bringing munchies with us. And water. Go to our favorite mtn lookout about 50 minutes east of the city, and get out, look at the stars, and talk about the Creator of this beautiful scenery.
